The History of Pittsburgh Penguins Hockey

Founded in 1967, the Pittsburgh Penguins have a rich history filled with tough struggles and epic triumphs. In their early years, the franchise struggled, often finishing at the bottom of the league. However, their fortunes began to change in the early 1990s with the arrival of Mario Lemieux, one of the greatest hockey players of all time. Under his leadership, the club won its first Stanley Cup in 1991, followed by another in the following year. 

They continued to enjoy success in the late 1990s and early 2000s, reaching the Stanley Cup Finals on several occasions. However, they were unable to recapture their championship glory until 2009, when they defeated the Detroit Red Wings in seven games, to win their third Stanley Cup. Then, in 2016 and 2017, they won back-to-back Stanley Cups, becoming the first team to do so since 1998.

Seating

Those who like being close to the players should search for seats in Sections 101–103, which are situated behind their benches. The home team takes their place closer to Section 101, and the visitors take their place in front of Section 103. Across the ice, Section 112 is behind the penalty box, and the Pens shoot twice at the goal in front of Section 107. 

If you’re looking for the party, you’ll find it around Sections 206 and 207, but with family in tow, you’ll be more comfortable in Sections 115 or 116 near the Kids’ Zone. More budget-friendly options are on the upper level, with Sections 204–218, which surround the Penguins’ shoot-twice goal.

Alternative Transportation

Port Authority of Allegheny County operates the T system. This Light Rail Transit service gets passengers to Steel Plaza Station, the closest endpoint to PPG Paints Arena. Port Authority buses provide additional options, including routes 61A, 71, and 81, which stop in the vicinity of the venue.

Riders can pay with cash or use contactless payment methods, such as the ConnectCard or Port Authority’s official app. Check the website for the most up-to-date schedule and fare information.
